The role of syndicate in the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda

2023 Mar 24
Since 2015, the United Nations Organization has developed a collective and global
action plan for the fulfillment of the goals of the 2030 Agenda; although this plan
focuses on the governments of the 193 countries that signed the Agenda, it also
encourages the cooperation of the private sector, civil society and all stakeholders
interested in finding solutions to the social, economic and environmental problems
of today's world.

Among the stakeholders, workers and labor organizations stand out, the latter
including trade unions, which can become strategic allies for the implementation of
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The experience of trade unions in the protection of workers' rights, as well as
dialogue and collective bargaining, have been fundamental to face the social and
economic challenges in the world, especially with the changes generated in the
work models by the crisis of Covid-19.

In Mexico, unions have been instrumental in recent years in achieving
improvements in workers' rights, such as: the increase in the minimum wage; the
reform that reduces the number of weeks of pension contributions and increases
employer contributions; the end of third-party labor contracting; the reform of the
Infonavit law that allows workers to choose how they use their resources for
housing; and most recently the increase in mandatory vacation days by law.

In coordination with the employer sector, unions can shape new resilient industrial
strategies, capable of responding to the incessant changes brought about by
technological advances and constant crises, by creating labor adjustment and
technology transfer programs, as well as the promotion of technical and
professional skills.

These organizations can also contribute to the care of the environment, integral
development, and governance, promoting the active participation of workers in the
elaboration of proposals for public policies, government programs, their evaluation,
and accountability, both in labor issues and in environmental, social, and economic
development.

At Marhnos, as leaders in real estate and infrastructure projects, we know that
close collaboration with the union that represents our employees is fundamental to
promote the integral development of our workers, as well as to improve their
professional and personal quality of life and that of their families; we seek their
well-being with work environments where there is a balance between life and work.

We know that joining forces with trade unions is essential to maintain the steady
growth of productive jobs, promote decent work, improve the quality of life of
workers and end poverty in order to move towards a sustainable world of
opportunity for all, as established in the SDGs.
