Cross-Border Bridges: Key Infrastructure for International Trade Development between Mexico and the United States

2023 Feb 28
Cross-border bridges are fundamental for international trade, economic
development, and cooperation in the places where they are located, thanks to the
connection they generate between countries or regions, allowing the controlled
entry and exit of people, materials, products, goods, merchandise, goods, and
services.

However, today, beyond these traditional functions, border crossings must be
communicating vessels that facilitate connectivity and mobility between regions
that share territory and that, in this globalized world, require safe, efficient,
competitive, and accessible infrastructure, as well as quality services.

In Mexico, there are approximately 3,200 kilometers of border with the United
States, with 40 border crossings: 8 in Baja California with crossings to California; 7
in Sonora with directions to Arizona; 8 in Chihuahua, of which two border with New
Mexico and 6 with Texas; as well as 2 in Coahuila, 1 in Nuevo Leon, and 13 in
Tamaulipas, also with the Texas border.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs
annually record more than 300 million land crossings between the two countries,
making this border one of the busiest in the world. In addition, the ten border states
of both nations represent the fourth largest economy in the world, and for Mexico,
this region generates more than 20% of the national GDP.

At Marhnos, we are proud to be a stakeholder in the development of these border
crossings. In 1989, we built the Mexican section of the Reynosa-Pharr International
Bridge and have operated it with high quality standards for more than 20 years.
Since 2007, we have operated, preserved, and maintained the Mexican section of
the Anzalduas International Bridge, which connects the city of Reynosa,
Tamaulipas, with the city of Mission, Texas, offering safe and agile service to more
than 3,000 vehicles per day along its 2,558 km.

Our participation in the construction of cross-border bridges has been under a
model of sustainability carried out by carrying out integrated projects that, in
addition to facilitating bilateral trade and regulating the international transit of
people by land, seek environmental impact factors, promote social inclusion, and
gender equality with the hiring of local people and companies, as well as promoting
the participation of women in the projects.

For Marhnos, it is very important to recognize the value of border crossings for
sustainable development, and we promote the implementation of safe, efficient,
competitive, accessible infrastructure projects and quality services to consolidate
regional growth, strengthen markets, attract investment, and increase
competitiveness in global value chains, while at the same time promoting social
well-being and care for the environment.
